A $9 billion industry in New York City

Hollywood's footprint in New York City is no secret. The Statue of Liberty, aerial views of Manhattan, the Empire State Building and the Staten Island Ferry are iconic shots of the city.

The entertainment industry generates roughly $9 billion annually and provides some 130,000 New Yorkers with jobs, according to the city.

This year alone, the city issued more than 3,200 permits for crews to shoot feature films, television shows and more in the five boroughs, according to city data compiled by the Advance.

The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment says that in recent years project application fees required for permits to film in New York City have generated $1 million in revenue for the city.

21 permits to shoot on Island in 2018

In 2018, the city handed out 21 permits for television shows, feature films, and a documentary to be shot on Staten Island.

A majority of those permits -- 17 -- were for television shows. Three were issued to shoot feature films, and one was issued to shoot a documentary.

Since 2012, the hottest time to film was in 2017. That year, the city handed out 119 permits to shoot television shows, commercials and feature films on Staten Island.

Where were 2018 feature films shot?

This year, three feature films were shot around Staten Island from April to the end of May.

According to the city's office of Media and Entertainment, a film shot on the North Shore around Henderson Avenue was "The First Purge."

The other films was shot on the South Shore around Amboy Road, and another around Carteret Street.

The city's office of Media and Entertainment said those two movies were small independent films that have not been released or given a title.

Manhattan leads boroughs in film permits

You probably guessed it already -- this year Manhattan led the five boroughs with the most film permits -- 1,582  total -- issued.

Since 2012, the city has issued 25,805  permits for crews to film in Manhattan.

And since 2012, 51,538  have been issued to all of the boroughs combined.

'No fee' film locations on Island

The city's Department of Media and Entertainment promotes several city-owned locations on Staten Island that crews can film at "no fee."

Those sites include: The Staten Island Supreme Court; Borough Hall; Silver Lake; Lemon Creek; the Korean War Memorial Highway; and Clove Lakes Park.

The Korean War Memorial Highway was featured in "The War of the Worlds" in 2005.
