Family matters: Bama's new QB commit talks Bear Bryant legacy

Hewitt-Trussville's Paul Tyson has another season of high school football to play, but he became Alabama's quarterback of the future after committing to the Crimson Tide on Thursday.

The great-grandson of legendary Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, Tyson threw for 3,392 yards and 36 touchdowns, with only four interceptions, last year as the Huskies finished 10-0 in the regular season for the second straight season. He's currently a four-star prospect, according to 247 sports.

Now that he's committed, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound Tyson plans to only visit Alabama, expects to graduate high school in December and wants to help recruit other top prospects for the Tide.

Paul Tyson spoke to AL.com on Thursday night -just hours after making his commitment public - for a short question-and-answer session.

Q: What has today, the day you committed, been like for you?
"It's been amazing to know I found my home at Alabama, and it's really something special to me. It's been a great journey so far, and I've really enjoyed it. Now, I'm kind of glad it's come to an end, and I found a place where I really want to be."

Q: Why did you choose Alabama and why commit now?
"Really, because it felt like home. I tried to be open-minded throughout the recruiting process, but honestly it just came down to how great Alabama was and I felt like I fit best in that system and the coaches -- coach (Nick) Saban, coach (Dan) Enos and coach (Brent) Key -- really wanted me to commit. It just felt like it was time.

"Also, with the timing, not that many people have committed yet, and it feels like a good time to go get this class rolling and for me to step into the role with some others to start being a leader in the class."

Q: Your Hewitt-Trussville teammate, Pierce Quick, an offensive lineman, is committed to Alabama. How much, if any, influence did that have on you?
"He definitely had a lot of influence. I mean, Pierce is my boy. We are always together, hanging out or on the football field together. Me and him just sticking together, he's my tackle now and he'll be my tackle in college."

Q: It's no secret about your family tie to Alabama, as Bear Bryant's great-grandson, and you even referenced it in your tweet to announce your commitment. What does it to mean to you to be going to the place where your great-grandfather had so much success?
"It's really something special to me. It's obviously a huge honor to have in my life, and really it's something cool to think about that he coached there and I'm going to have a chance to play there. It's really something special."

Q: Now that your commitment is out of the way and recruiting shuts down for you, what's next and how do you go through the summer and your 2018 high school season?
"Really, I'll keep getting on the campus at Alabama and trying to get recruits to commit and make the decision to go to Alabama, because we definitely want to make sure this class gets back on top and gets ranked No. 1 again.

"Right now, I can be recruiting with that and focus on my senior year."
