The trailer for the forthcoming Judy Garland biopic, Judy, has just one instruction: Sound on. That's so you can hear, as well as see, Renée Zellweger take on the persona of legendary singer and actress.
The film starts not at the beginning of Garland's illustrious career, which included roles in The Wizard of Oz, A Star Is Born, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Ziegfeld Follies, but at a crisis point for Garland: the winter of 1968. From the death of her father and drug problems to an attempt on her own life, the star suffered through many problems; she was also married five times, and her voice began to deteriorate as she became more unwell.
In the beginning of the trailer, when checking into a hotel room with her children, she's refused access to the suite, because her account is "in arrears." "I don't have a home. I can't even get a manager," she says. The solution? Go to London for a five-week run at the Talk of the Town, where she'd be able to make a good living. But it would mean leaving her children behind, as well as new love Mickey Deans.
Those who know Garland's story will also know it was one of her last live acts—the actress died a few months after her final performance, in 1969, after an accidental drug overdose.
Judy also stars Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock, Rufus Sewell, Michael Gambon, and Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey. It will be in theatres on September 27.
