CLEVELAND, Ohio - In front of family, friends, and nearly 70,000 Cleveland Browns fans, Clay Matthews was inducted into the Browns Ring of Honor during halftime of Sunday Night Football.
Browns fans gave the 16-year Brown a standing ovation when his name was revealed in the ring.
Matthews was all smiles and shared a few words with the sold-out FirstEnergy Stadium crowd. His son, Rams defensive lineman Clay Matthews III, was able to slip out of his team’s halftime routine to stand on the stage with the family for a few moments.
“I’m humbled to be honored and thanks go out to the Cleveland Browns organization, the Haslam family, General Manager John Dorsey, and to the most electrifying fans I can find,” Matthews said at the podium after his name was unveiled. “I’m blessed to be in a family that has become a football mob. Football has pushed the Matthews family to every corner of this country.”
As one of the team’s most popular players, Matthews is finally where he belongs, in the Browns Ring of Honor.
Browns fans hope his next stop is the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is now the only Browns Ring of Honor member not yet enshrined in Canton despite being named a semifinalist three times.
