Matthew Starr and Jamie Starr

A Metro Detroit couple is accused of second-degree murder in the death of a 2-year-old boy found lifeless inside a play pen about 5 p.m. March 18.

Medics arrived to a home in Wayne occupied by Jamie Starr, the child's stepmother, and Matthew Starr, the child's father, where "they observed the lifeless body of the child who was cold to the touch," the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said in a charging statement Monday, Sept. 24.

"It is alleged that the couple caused the death of the child by keeping the him in a pack and play (a play pen with sides) with a gate on top forming a makeshift cage which led to his death by asphyxiation."

The couple was jailed without bond.

They are scheduled to appear for a probable cause conference at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 2 and a preliminary examination at 9 a.m. Oct. 9.
