These Brooklyn Schools Have Deteriorating Lead-Based Paint

Department of Education inspectors found more than 360 classrooms with deteriorating lead paint in these Brooklyn public schools.

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — More than 360 Brooklyn schools have deteriorating lead-based paint that the city needs to stabilize before the next school year begins, according to Department of Education data released Wednesday.

DOE inspectors found lead paint in exactly 361 Brooklyn schools — more than in any other borough — that require immediate stabilization, health officials said.

Patch asked the DOE to clarify whether stabilization — a process that involves sealing contaminants and painting over the contaminated wall — was a permanent solution to the problem but did not receive an immediate response.

But spokesperson Miranda Barbot said in a statement, "Our schools are safe."

"We've enhanced our protocols and strengthened communication with families around the steps we take to prevent lead exposure for kids under six," Barbot said. "We're going to remain vigilant throughout the year and regularly inspect, test, and immediately address any concern in our buildings."

Custodians inspected 5,408 public school classrooms used by kids younger than 6 starting in the last week of June and found broken-up paint containing lead in 938 — or about 17 percent — of them, the DOE said.

The inspections found deteriorated lead-based paint in 361 Brooklyn classrooms, 327 Bronx classrooms, 139 Queens classrooms, 59 Staten Island classrooms and 52 Manhattan classrooms, the DOE's data show.
