In our long list of reasons why Donald Trump must not come anywhere close to another term, we’ve already mentioned his contempt for those who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice and touched on his stubborn tendency to deflect responsibility. But even we were stunned when Thursday, when he casually blamed Gold Star families — the parents, siblings, children of deceased service members — for infecting him with COVID-19.

During a near-hour-long rant on the Fox Business channel, he told Maria Bartiromo: “I figured there’d be a chance I’d catch it…Sometimes, I’d be in groups of, for instance, Gold Star families…they all came in, and they all talk about their son and daughter and father. And, you know, they all came up to me, and they tell me a story…I can’t say, ‘Back up, stand 10 feet,’ you know? I just can’t do it.”

Don’t bother checking the echo sounder; it’s impossible to measure the depths to which the man’s character has sunk. For one, he casts himself as hero and victim who can’t say no to the Gold Star families sharing their sorrow.

Worse, he’s almost definitely lying to distract from his own patent irresponsibility.

The Gold Star family reception was Sept. 27, the day after the Supreme Court nomination event in the Rose Garden, to which the infection of many others can be traced back to. The most likely explanation: Trump was infected in the Rose Garden — or he infected people on both days.

After failing to protect the country and his staff from a deadly pandemic, this president cowardly blames his infection on grieving relatives of those who sacrificed all for this nation.

He deserves a dishonorable discharge.
