It's not hard to see why the picturesque village of Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage site. With their steeply slanted pointed roofs (a building style known as gasshō-zukuri), designed to resemble two hands in prayer, coupled with the snow-capped mountains, the village is straight out of a fairytale.

Once a farm, then a film set, and now a tourist attraction, the wonderful village of Hobbiton is a must-see (even if you're not a LOTR fan). It doesn't get much prettier (or quaint) than this.

Colmar, France

Founded in the 9th century and very well preserved, the old town and Little Venice areas of Colmar make a wonderful visit (think lots of flowerbeds, brightly coloured houses and beautiful canals). Make sure to sample some Alsation wine, which the region prides itself on.

Morro de São Paulo, Brazil

The South American equivalent to a classic Mediterranean island village, Morro de São Paulo is as close to a beach paradise village getaway you'll get. Clear blue waters, golden sands and no cars, Morro de São Paulo really is the exotic twin to a small, sleepy England village.

Clovelly, Devon

Wind back the clock in Clovelly, Devon, where cars are banned from the quaint cobbled high street that winds its way down the steep hillside to the ancient harbour. Park at the top of the hill before making a leisurely descent through the traditional whitewashed cottages draped with vibrant fuchsias and geraniums, making sure to sample the array of charming cafes and souvenir shops along the way.

Popeye Village, Malta

Another original filmset, Popeye Village was built for the 1980 live-action musical film Popeye, starring Robin Williams. Located on Anchor Bay, there are plenty of beautiful beaches and coves in the area, and the ramshackle buildings make for a very unique view.

Wuyuan, China

Actually a city in the Jiangxi Province, Wuyuan consists of several small, beautiful villages. The countryside is renowned throughout China, and many villages are surrounded by rice paddies and carpets of yellow when the rapeseed flowers bloom.

Hallstatt, Austria

It doesn't get much more peaceful (and staggeringly beautiful) than Hallstatt. Glassy waters, colourful houses and all encased by tall mountains, the small village is Austria's hidden gem. If you're in Vienna, you can hop on a train which only takes between 3 and 4 hours.

Riomaggiore, Italy

Part of the stunning Cinque Terre region, Riomaggiore is a village soaked in history, vibrancy and, of course, good wine (made by the town's own vineyards). A must for those in the La Spezia province, hopping on a boat between the Cinque Terre villages is an experience you'll never forget.

Reine, Norway

As if we needed another reason to hop on a plane to postcard pretty Norway. A rustic fishing village with a population of just around 300, Reine forms part of the Lofoten Archipelago, a string of islands within the Arctic Circle. Expect breathtaking views, converted fisherman's cottages, clear skies (and, hopefully, the northern lights) and, above all, peace and calm. When's the next flight?
