Jackson-area basketball highlights: Columbia Central girls collect two wins

JACKSON, MI – It’s been a great week so far for the Columbia Central girls basketball team and it’s only Wednesday.

The Golden Eagles collected a pair of wins Monday and Tuesday to extend their winning streak to eight games.

Columbia Central defeated Erie Mason 70-55 on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles outscored Erie Mason 30-19 in the second and third quarters to pull away for a Lenawee County Athletic Association win on Tuesday night.

Taiya Fletcher scored 14 points to lead Columbia Central, while Zoie Bamm added 13 points and 13 rebounds. Lexi Collins had 11 points, Tadassa Brown had 10 points and 17 rebounds, Gracelyn Miller had nine points, Sydni Collins had seven points, and Kenadee Tompkins had six points.

On Monday, the Golden Eagles defeated Adrian Madison 56-27.

Zoie Bamm scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Columbia Central, while Taiya Fletcher scored 13 points and added three rebounds and four assists, and Elizabeth Curey and Sydni Collins each added eight points.

GIRLS

Dexter 60, Jackson 32

The Vikings took an early 10-5 lead over Dexter but were outscored 39-10 in the second and third quarters in a tough SEC White loss on Tuesday night.

Jada Patton scored eight points and added 11 rebounds, four steals and one block to lead Jackson, while Alaysia Johnson added seven points, 12 rebounds, four blocks, and one steal. Aria Moore added seven points, Dharyauna Pierce added seven points, six rebounds, three steals, and two assists, and Kayla Johnson had three points.

Northwest 66, Coldwater 38

The Mounties came out firing on all cylinders in the first half on their way to a 43-11 lead at the break and rolled to an impressive Interstate 8 Conference road on Tuesday night.

Morgan Hanchett scored 19 points to lead Northwest, while Jozie Bontrager added 12 points, Layne Sleight had 11 points and Anya Hedrick had nine points.

Western 54, Hastings 28

The Panthers took a quick 19-4 lead over the Saxons and never looked back in an Interstate 8 Conference road win Tuesday night.

Reece Hitt scored 13 points and added six assists to lead Western, while Alyna Lewis ended the night with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Natalie Shellberg had 11 points and six rebounds, Hillary Griffin chipped in with five points, four rebounds and three steals, and Hayden Fortress added four points and four rebounds.

Springport 60, Homer 29

The Spartans opened the game on a 33-10 run and cruised to a Big 8 Conference win over Homer on Tuesday.

Alana Nelson scored 29 points and added 15 rebounds, four steals, two assists and one block to lead Springport, while Alex Maher added 16 points, five assists and five rebounds, and Chelsea Hemminger had five points, two steals and one assist.

Jonesville 50, Union City 16

Natalie Doyle scored nine points to lead the Comets, while Kenzie Baker added eight points and seven rebounds. MJ Lehman had four points, 10 steals and seven rebounds, while Allison Sanders had two points and eight rebounds.

Blissfield 57, Hillsdale 40

The Royals started the second half on a 24-8 run and rolled to a Lenawee County Athletic Association win on Tuesday night.

Maria Estaban scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Hillsdale, while Grace Vondra added 10 points, and Sarah Korn had nine points, three rebounds and three steals.

Leslie 38, Dansville 31

The Blackhawks held off Dansville without leading scorer Emma Smeiska on Tuesday thanks to a stingy defense and timely free-throw shooting down the stretch.

Kalex Dodge scored 12 points to lead the Blackhawks, while Tommi Fedewa added 11 points, including a 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Lansing Christian 49, Stockbridge 48

Gwen Rogozinski led the Panthers with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Chelsey Asquith added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Brooklyn Rochow added six points and 11 rebounds, and Kaylee Dalton had six points and five assists.

Marshall 47, Lumen Christi 26

Cat Carroll scored eight points and added 10 rebounds, nine blocks, two assists and two steals to lead the Titans, while Anna Doane added five points.

Athens 45, Jackson Christian 34

Paiton Hollowood had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead Jackson Christian.

BOYS

East Jackson 62, Addison 58

The Trojans took a 26-18 lead into halftime but a 25-point third quarter from the Panthers put them in front by one point heading into the fourth quarter. East Jackson prevailed down the stretch with some timely buckets and key defensive stops to come away with the Cascades Conference road win.

Devon Poole scored 22 points to lead East Jackson, while Austin McKessy added 13 points, and Jake Swiontek had 11 points.

Luke Atkin led the Panthers with 17 points, while Caleb Gramm added nine points, six rebounds, and six assists. Travis Whitaker added 12 points, and Kobe Farrow chipped in 11 points.

Dexter 60, Jackson 40

The Vikings fell behind 13-8 to start the game and were outscored 38-25 in the second half in an SEC White loss to Dexter on Tuesday.

Kevin Payne led the Vikings with 14 points, while Daivion Bolware added 13 points.

Western 52, Hastings 44

The Panthers got off to a slow start in the first half but outscored the Saxons 34-24 in the second half to pick up an Interstate 8 Conference home win Tuesday.

Makyle Doss and Trey Cottingham each scored 12 points to lead the Panthers, while Brett Casto, Landon French, and Caleb Griffith each scored seven points.

“We shot very poorly from the field tonight,” said Western head coach Ryan Mulnix. “I felt that we pressed a lot and that caused us to miss shots we usually make. A lot of credit goes to the Hastings defense for our poor shooting. Our defense kept us in it, and we used it to create easy offense in the second half. Give credit to our guys for finding a way to get it done in the end.”

Michigan Center 80, Manchester 53

Roger Hayward scored 15 points to lead the Cardinals, while Brock Cyrocki added 14 points and four steals and Jaleel Brown had 13 points.

Senior guard Ty Horky surpassed the 1,000-point milestone in his varsity career with a made free throw in the second quarter of the game. He finished with 33 points to lead the Flying Dutchmen and is now fourth all-time on the school’s scoring list.

Napoleon 55, Vandercook Lake 41

The Pirates jumped out to a 13-4 lead and hold off the Jayhawks the rest of the way for a Cascades Conference win Tuesday night.

Jarod Viers scored 16 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead Napoleon, while Tobin McCrum added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Spencer Johnson and Kale Fairbanks each scored seven points.

Hanover-Horton 49, Grass Lake 39

The Comets held a narrow 14-11 lead at halftime but opened the second half on an 11-0 run and held off the Warriors the rest of the way for a Cascades Conference home win on Tuesday.

Mitch Sauber scored 19 points and added six rebounds and six assists to lead the Comets (5-1, 3-0 Cascades), while Luc Laketa scored 15 points. Jack Brockie added seven points, six rebounds and three assists, and Rhett Laketa had a team-high eight rebounds.

Louis Good scored 12 points to lead the Warriors (3-2, 2-1 Cascades), while Trae Ruggles added nine points, and Xavier and Brennan Bargesser each added seven points.

Blissfield 56, Hillsdale 42

The Royals opened the game on an 8-2 run and held off the Hornets the rest of the way for a Lenawee County Athletic Association win on Tuesday night.

Adam Felix scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Hillsdale, while Chalis Farmer added seven points, and Zach and Luke Kornak each added six points.

Stockbridge 67, Lansing Christian 42

The Panthers used a 24-9 run in the second quarter to pull away from Lansing Christian for a Greater Lansing Activities Conference win on Tuesday night.

Chris Hall scored 20 points to lead Stockbridge, while Noah Robidou added 14 points, and Tylin Ayers and Brandon Nelson each added 10 points.

Erie Mason 56, Columbia Central 49

Marshall 68, Lumen Christi 47

Jack Kelley scored 11 points and added three rebounds and two assists to lead the Titans, while Tommy Putman added seven points and four rebounds, and Conner Spencer added seven points.

Coldwater 54, Northwest 37

Ian Weller scored 14 points to lead the Mounties, while Dawson White added nine points.

Dylan Taggart scored 17 points to lead Coldwater.

The Comets jumped out to an 11-5 lead and held off Tecumseh for a non-conference win Monday.

Fauril McLouth scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Jonesville, while Luke Dawson added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Bath 39, East Jackson 33

Sand Creek 49, Concord 31

Adrian Lenawee Christian 56, Manchester 21

The Flying Dutch fell behind 19-2 after the first quarter and couldn’t complete a second-half comeback in a non-conference loss to top-ranked Adrian Lenawee Christian on Monday.

Taryn Fether scored six points to lead Manchester, while Mary Bradshaw added five points.
