Organize Your Activewear with These Storage Tips from Marie Kondo

Overhaul your activewear drawer with the queen of keeping tidy.

Raise your hand if you have an entire Lululemon store's worth of yoga pants, sports bras, and colorful socks-but always end up wearing the same two outfits. Yeah, same. Half the time it's not that you don't want to wear your other clothes-it's just that everything else is scattered around your room or hiding at the bottom of your drawer. It's time to face the facts: You have an organization problem.

Did you know there are legit health benefits to being organized? If you keep your world organized, you'll be less stressed, sleep better, and even boost your productivity and relationships. The simple steps you take to keep things in order are bound to help you in other aspects of your life, too-whether you're trying to lose weight, eat healthier, stick to your workouts, or improve your mood.

Who better to teach a class in Organization 101 than Marie Kondo? Author of the now-infamous book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Kondo is known as the master of modern decluttering and organization. Plus, she just recently launched her own line of helpful organization and storage boxes called hikidashi boxes (available for pre-order; konmari.com). Her organized-living advice has been dubbed The KonMari Method, which is a state of mind that includes getting rid of anything that no longer brings you joy. Fortunately, this can also be applied to your out-of-control activewear drawer.

Marie Kondo's Guide to Organizing Activewear

  1. Lay every legging, shirt, sock, and sports bra out in front of you. Then, decide which articles "spark joy." For those that don't, you should donate, give away, or throw out if they look too worn.
  2. Fold each item and stack them-vertically, not horizontally-so you can easily see every article and reach for your favorite. This cuts out that annoying "where's that shirt?" digging time, and also helps you make sure that you use everything you have.
  3. Use boxes to store items that come unfolded easily, such as leggings, running shorts, and sports bras. Ditch the box lids, so it's easy to see everything inside.
  4. Store smaller objects (such as hair bands and socks) in drawers.

Now that your activewear is in order, you can start thinking about that hall closet. Maybe.
