NEW JERSEY — Forecasters have updated the snow totals for a late-week storm set to move across New Jersey beginning on Friday afternoon, and issued more winter weather advisories.
AccuWeather and the National Weather Service are both calling for up to six inches of snow in parts of New Jersey.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, Sussex, and Somerset counties and parts of Bergen, Passaic, and Essex counties from 1 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday.
These counties could see total snow accumulations of one to four inches, with locally higher amounts in elevated areas, according to the National Weather Service’s Mount Holly office.
Precipitation will begin moving into the region late Friday morning with "widespread rain" by the afternoon, said the NWS.
"Locations near and southeast of I-78 will end up starting mostly as rain with some sleet possible at the onset, but up in the Poconos and parts of Sussex County NJ, primarily snow is expected," forecasters said in their Thursday afternoon update.
Plan for slippery road conditions which could impact the Friday evening commute, forecasters said.
In the southern Poconos and far northwestern NJ, precipitation “will start as snow and continue as snow through Friday night.”
Other northern NJ communities will see a rain/snow mix Friday afternoon becoming snow on Friday night.
“Precipitation may briefly end as snow Saturday morning throughout,” the NWS added.
Those in the central part of the Garden State might also see some snow, forecasters said, but expect mostly rain there and in South Jersey.
Looking further ahead —minor coastal flooding is also possible with the high tide cycle along the NJ ocean coasts on Saturday evening and early Sunday morning, said the NWS.
And, a gale watch is in effect for the Atlantic coastal waters on Saturday. Wind gusts of 35 to 40 kt are expected, with seas seven to eleven feet.
Next week, a second storm may develop into a potent nor'easter for the region, which forecasters are also tracking.
