Talk about a cock fight! Chick-fil-A, Wendy's, and Popeyes bicker on Twitter over who has the best chicken sandwich - as Popeyes' version sells out in dozens of stores across the US

  • Popeyes debuted its first-ever fried chicken sandwich last week
  • On Monday, Chick-fil-A tweeted about the original — theirs — being the best
  • After Popeyes fired back, Wendy's chimed in with their own shade, prompting some back-and-forth sparring
  • Even Shake Shack entered the fray, as thousands of social media users weighed in and took sides
  • Since their sandwich debuted over a week ago, Popeyes has sold out of it in several stores

Welcome to the great fast food chicken sandwich feud of 2019, where the meat — and the insults — are coming in hot.

Last week, Popeyes debuted its first-ever fried chicken sandwich, sending fans of the chain running to order the buttermilk-battered brioche bun meal.

But Popeyes isn't content to just charm its own loyal customers: It's coming for Chick-fil-A supporters, too, and made that bitingly clear when it kicked off a feud with the fast food rival on Twitter on Monday.

Fighin' words! Last week, Popeyes debuted its first-ever fried chicken sandwich  and this week, the brand is feuding with other fast food chains

This particular cock fight began with a tweet from Popeyes promoting its new sandwich, which is made with either mayo or spicy Cajun spread.

'Chicken. Brioche. Pickles. New. Sandwich. Popeyes. Nationwide. So. Good. Forgot. How. Speak. In. Complete. Sandwiches. I mean, sentences,' the brand wrote on April 12.

A week later, Chick-fil-A mimicked the tweet with its own, writing: 'Bun + Chicken + Pickles = all the ❤️ for the original.'

Popeyes quickly punched back, writing, '...y'all good?'

Fast food fans were quickly taking sides, reacting with memes and jokes of their own. They also cast their own votes with likes: While Chick-fil-A's tweet was liked over 19,000 times, Popeyes' reply was liked over 309,000 times.

And it still wasn't over.

Later that night, Wendys — the fast food chain that that might be called the godfather of snarky brand accounts — chimed in.

'Y’all out here fighting about which of these fools has the second best chicken sandwich,' the Wendy's account tweeted.

Popeyes soon at a retort for them, too: 'Sounds like someone just ate one of our biscuits. Cause y’all looking thirsty.'

'lol, guess that means the food’s as dry as the jokes,' Wendy's replied.

Other Twitter users watching this unfold have expressed both delight and exhaustion at the feud.

'One day our children will ask us, where were you during the chicken sandwich wars of ‘19,' joked Insecure showrunner Prentice Penny.

'I just opened twitter and saw a chicken sandwich feud and that is honestly the content i signed up for,' tweeted someone else.

'This the kinda beef I’m here for,' joked yet another person, while a fourth showed approval for Popeyes by writing: 'Whoever running this account is next level petty and I’m here for it.'

Eventually, even Shake Shack — which also has a chicken sandwich — jumped into the fray.

'If you're lookin' for a chicken sandwich (without the beef [winking face]), you know where to find us,' the brand wrote.

While it would be impossible to tell which chain's chicken sandwich was more popular and sold more units, one thing is certain: Popeyes underestimated the demand for their newest menu item.

Since it debuted across the US over a week ago, several restaurant locations have sold out of the sandwich.

Social media users have shared their disappointment, posting pictures of signs hung up on cash registers, drive-thru menus, and front doors.

Those who have managed to get their hands and mouths on them seem to be impressed.

'A'ye that Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich ? 111111111% worth the hype,' one person wrote on Twitter.

'My body went limp after the first bite but imma little dramatic so... Also better than Chick-fil-A. That’s not an exaggeration. Try it with some blackened ranch dipping sauce.,' said another.

Yet another chimed in: 'The Popeyes Spicy Chicken Sandwich is so good I’m writing it in for President in 2020.'
