Fort Zumwalt North - Winter Sports Update

The Panthers are off to a strong start this winter.

Winter Sports – Update

Boys Basketball

The boys team split their two most recent contests. The Panthers defeated FZE 60 – 53 last week, before falling to perennial conference power Fort Zumwalt South 52 – 47 this past Tuesday. Against East, the Panthers were led by the trio of KJ Lee (16 points), Drake Stevenson (14 points), and Grant Rapplean (13 points), who all put up double digits in scoring. Mujtaba “Moosh” Alkhaldi pulled down 11 boards against the Lions. Lee leads the team in both scoring (15.3 ppg.) and assists (2.86 apg.). Alkahaldi is the team’s leading rebounder, averaging 7.3 boards per game. In a game that was close throughout, the Panthers came up a bit short in their upset bid against the Bulldogs. The Panthers were once again led by KJ Lee who tallied 20 points on the night. Lee is proving to be one of the top players in the conference and has gained the attention of several college programs. The Panthers now stand at 8 – 6 (1 – 2 conference) this season. Next week, the Panthers host Timberland (1/21) and play at Liberty (1/24) before hosting their own invitational slated to begin on 1/26.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team currently stands at 10 – 3 (2 – 0 conference) after winning their last 5 contests. In their most recent outing, the Panthers nipped rival Fort Zumwalt South 41 – 40. The victory over South followed-up a 48 – 44 overtime win over Troy last week. The girls have been led by the dynamic duo of Jaden Stahl (12.4 ppg.) and Jordyn Grimes (12.3 ppg.) who lead the team in scoring. Stahl is also the team’s leading rebounder (8.6 rbg.) while Grimes leads the team in assists (2.91 apg.) Jessica Clausner, Claudia Hoff and Jerrica Moody have also played well for the Panthers. Kayley Judy has stood out as a defensive specialist. Tomorrow night the Panthers travel to Holt to take on the highly regarding Indians before returning to conference play next week with games against Timberland (1/21) and Liberty (1/24).

Girls Swimming

The Lady “Swimcats” have had a strong season thus far. The Panthers are 5 – 2 in dual meets, winning their most recent contest against Francis Howell Central. Last weekend, the Panthers finished 4th in their own 12 team invitational. Individual stand-outs include: Sydney Kelsey, who has broken two school records (200 IM, 100 Breaststroke) this season. Kelsey has achieved state qualifying time in the breaststroke and is currently ranked in the state’s top 8 in the event. Diver Madi Watters has also qualified for state. While, Nadia Wuest has garnered state consideration status in diving. Wuest and Watters finished 1st and 2nd at the FZN Invitational. Avery Meade and Gwen Raziq have also achieved state consideration status in their respective events. Raziq and Meade both qualified for state last season. All three of the team’s relays (Medley, 200 Free, 400 Free) have achieved state consideration status. The relay teams consist of Raziq, Kelsey, Meade and senior Jillian Walls. This Friday, the “Swimcats” travel to Pattonville for a tri-meet with the host school and St. Charles West.

Boys Wrestling

The boys wrestling team finished 3rd at the recently held GAC Tournament. The tournament featured all 17 GAC schools from across the conference’s three divisions. Logan Prinster (132) and Derrick Buda-Smith (170) both claimed individual titles at the event. It was the second conference championship for Prinster. Also medaling at the GAC were: Storhm Jones (2nd – 120), Parker Monnig (6th – 182), Eddie Anglebeck (3rd – 195), Ryan Medley (5th – 220) and Brendan Mahoney (3rd – 285). Buda-Smith (25 – 1), Prinster (25 – 5), Storhm Jones (24 – 4) and Chance Cole (20 – 2) have the top individual records for the Panthers so far this season. Cole did not wrestle at the GAC. This week the Panthers will travel to the state of Illinois to wrestle a dual meet vs. Clinton (IL) on Friday before wrestling in the Marty Williams Invitational (Mahomat, IL) on Saturday.

Girls Wrestling

The girls wrestling team finished 5th at the recently held 17 team GAC Tournament. The Panthers had five individuals place in the top 4 at the event to earn medals. Those individuals include: Courtnee Hoff (4th), Ali Burkemper (4th), Zoe Santa-Cruz (4th), Trinity Davis (3rd), and Ashley Head (2nd). Santa-Cruz (6th) and Head (6th) also earned medals at the prestigious 64 team “Wonder Woman” Classic held over winter break. The girls return to action this weekend as they compete in the St. Charles Tournament scheduled for this Friday and Saturday.
