WASHINGTON, DC β€” A new poll indicates that the concept of D.C. statehood is widely unpopular nationwide.

Gallup released a new poll that found that 64 percent of Americans opposed D.C. statehood versus just 29 percent who were in favor, which is consistent with previous polls by other firms.

The poll was conducted June 19-30. Predictably, support was highest among left-leaning political groups and lowest among those on the right, since D.C. statehood would grant District residents -- who overwhelmingly vote Democrat -- one representative and two U.S. senators. However, even among Democrats, the proposal had just 39 percent support.

Some Republicans have suggested a compromise of allowing D.C. to be absorbed into the state of Maryland, which already heavily leans Democratic.
