A Nottingham Trent University student has posted a video online of people chanting "we hate the blacks".

Rufaro Chisango shared a video she says was taken on Monday evening, as she hid in her room while the group shouted outside her door.

In the video, the back of a door is visible as people are heard shouting "we hate the blacks".

Two 18-year-old men have been arrested and are in police custody.

Ms Chisango tweeted the video with the comment: "Yoo I’m fuming, the way people in the same uni halls as me are chanting 'we hate the blacks' outside my bedroom door. Words cannot describe how sad this makes me feel, in this 2018 people think this is still acceptable."

She says she is the only black student living on her floor and believes she was targeted.

Ms Chisango added: "I told the reception and they said that this will be dealt with Tuesday morning, they took my details and said they would inform me... it’s Wednesday night and they haven’t."

In the video, other students can be heard shouting for her to be left alone, but this does not appear to deter the abuse.

A woman's voice can be heard shouting: "We hate black people, white people are best."

Tatenda Kanyere, the university's African-Caribbean Society President, told Sky News: "Rufaro was just shocked, she did not expect it. It was out of the blue.

"She had to stay in the accommodation afterwards.

"This is the first time (this had happened). From our conversations, she does not think there was anything that sparked it, it was uncalled for.

"We hope justice is served."

Mr Kanyere is accompanying Ms Chisango to a meeting with the university's student services today.

Nottingham Trent University tweeted: "We are investigating this as a matter of urgency. We are taking this extremely seriously and do not tolerate behaviour like this."

A spokesman for the university said the suspected perpetrators had been suspended immediately "pending a full investigation".

The spokesman added: "We are shocked and appalled to see the video of racist chanting posted yesterday evening. This kind of vile behaviour will not be tolerated at Nottingham Trent University.

"We have contacted the student who made the complaint and are providing support to her and others affected and we will be liaising with the police about this incident.

"We are also working with our accommodation partner to understand why the university was only alerted to this on Wednesday evening after this was reported to them in the very early hours of Tuesday."

Nottingham Police said in a statement: "We are aware of a video posted at Nottingham Trent University and which has been shared on social media. It is wholly unacceptable and we're proactively investigating the incident and liaising with the university."
