Yankees voice John Sterling expects to return soon after blood infection scare

After a four-day stay in the hospital, John Sterling, the radio voice of the Yankees, expects to return to calling games Wednesday.

“Everything is cool,” Sterling told The Post.

Sterling, 82, said he had an infection in his blood, which is why he ended up in the hospital. As he was talking to The Post, he was being released from Englewood Hospital in New Jersey. Sterling said the good news was the infection did not reach his heart. He also tested negative for COVID-19.

He said he thought he could be back on Tuesday, but rain has already postponed that game, lining him up to come back for Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Phillies.

As usual, he sounded in very good spirits with his voice strong. Sterling said he planned to return by midweek, but his bosses at WFAN could choose to take it a little slower. The station is broadcasting both home and away games from Yankee Stadium.

Sterling has been replaced since last Wednesday by Yankees’ Spanish language play-by-play man Rickie Ricardo. But it sounds as if Sterling will be back with Suzyn Waldman soon.

Sterling does not like to miss games. Last July, his streak of 5,058 consecutive games ended.
