Xi marks opening of world's longest sea bridge to Hong Kong

55 km link holds key to China's envisioned Greater Bay Area economic zone

HONG KONG -- The world's longest sea-crossing bridge, connecting mainland China and Macau with Hong Kong, is set to open on Wednesday, giving Chinese President Xi Jinping a centerpiece for his vision of a "Greater Bay Area" economic zone. 

Xi on Tuesday attended an opening ceremony for the crossing, which extends 55 km from the mainland city of Zhuhai, in the southern province of Guangdong.
