Pets are blessed at annual ceremony in Blackman Park

JACKSON, MI - Dogs, cats and their owners filled Blackman Park in downtown Jackson on Sunday for the annual “Blessing of the Animals.”

Pets and their owners were able to listen to music, inspirational words and receive a blessing on May 26, from the Rev. Kerry Taylor-Snyder of Jackson’s First Congregational Church.

“It’s a service that dates back for centuries" said Taylor-Snyder. "We carry on that proud tradition with celebrating all the animals, those who live with us in our houses, those that are in the trees, those who are in the lakes or crawling on the ground.”

Each year the service is done outside on the last Sunday in May. This is the 10th year the First Congregational Church has done the service.

Taylor-Snyder hopes that the service will help others take better care of animals.

“My hope is that people will see the animals as God’s creation, and that they are loved and that we should take better care of them.”
