Red Sox Not Asking Manager Back After Dismal 2020 Season

In a statement released before the start of Sunday's season finale, the team said it would begin looking for a new manager "immediately."

"While we believe that, moving forward, we will benefit from new leadership and new energy, that does not diminish how strongly we feel about Ron," Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said in a statement.

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox are parting ways with Ron Roenicke, who led the team to a 23-36 record heading into Sunday afternoon's season finale.

"While we believe that, moving forward, we will benefit from new leadership and new energy, that does not diminish how strongly we feel about Ron," Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said in a statement. "As manager, he showed poise and leadership in navigating an extremely challenging year."

Bloom said the team would begin looking for Roenicke's replacement "immediately."

Roenicke was named interim manager after the Red Sox fired Alex Cora in January for his role in a cheating scandal when he was the bench coach for the Houston Astros. Roenicke's only spring training as manager of the Red Sox was cut short in March as the coronavirus pandemic halted professional sports, leading to the shortened, 60-game regular season which ends Sunday.

The Red Sox are scheduled to play their final game of their first losing season since 2015 against the Braves in Atlanta at 3:10 p.m. Sunday.
