The Polar Plunge, an annual event where people brave freezing water to raise money for the Special Olympics, will be virtual this year.

MANASSAS, VA — Gone are the images of Polar Plunge participants rushing into bone-chilling water. The annual charity event to support the Virginia Special Olympics will instead be held virtually this week.

This year's Polar Plunge will culminate with a virtual celebration on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 10 a.m.

Normally, the Polar Plunge sees individuals brave frigid waters together in an effort to raise money for the Special Olympics. This year, residents are encouraged to be creative in their socially-distanced plunges, according to the state's Polar Plunge website.

The Special Olympics provide sports training and athletic opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities, according to their website. Their mission focuses on keeping these people physically fit, while allowing them an opportunity to show their skills and share experiences with friends, family, and other competitors.

Instead of braving waters as a group, prospective plungers are advised to embrace whatever body of water they see fit, whether it's a shower, hot tub, or a lake. To receive credit for their plunge, participants should sign up on the Virginia Special Olympics' website, and post their plunge on social media with "#plungeyourway."

For those who prefer to stay dry, but still want to support the cause, the Polar Plunge also has a donation page.

As a week-long celebration this year, the Polar Plunge has added additional events, including a virtual costume contest and special deals on Polar Plunge merchandise to support the Virginia Special Olympics.

The latest information on this year's Polar Plunge celebration can be found on their website and Facebook page.
