“Annabelle Comes Home” — Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, McKenna Grace; directed by Gary Dauberman

Remember Annabelle, the sinister doll in the “Annabelle” series? Well, she’s back yet again to unleash another hellish terror!

“Annabelle Comes Home”— the third installment of the “Annabelle” series, and the seventh film in James Wan’s “Conjuring” universe— stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the famous married paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, joined by Mckenna Grace as their 10-year-old daughter, Judy.

Picking up one year after the events of “The Conjuring,” the new film opens with Ed (Wilson) and Lorraine (Farmiga) determined to stop Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, eventually placing the evil doll in the locked artifacts room in their home.

However, over the course of one terrifying night, Annabelle gets awakened when the couple are away, leaving their daughter Judy (Grace), her babysitter Mary Ellen (Madison Iseman) and her troubled friend Daniela (Katie Sarife) all alone to battle the evil darkness.

Will Judy, Mary Ellen and Daniela survive Annabelle’s fury as the demonic doll summons other evil spirits to her side? Can Ed and Lorraine save their daughter and her friends before time runs out?

See it. Frightening enough, though not as good as other films in the “Conjuring” universe.

“Yesterday” — Himesh Patel, Lily James; directed by Danny Boyle

The rock ‘n roll comedy about dreams, love and friendship comes from Danny Boyle’s latest outing, starring Himesh Patel as a struggling musician in a tiny English seaside town, and Lily James as his supportive childhood best friend.

The film follows the story of Jack Malik (Patel), a British singer-songwriter who spends his days stocking shelves, and his nights moonlighting as a bar singer, cheered on by his talent manager Ellie (James), who happens to be also his number one fan. One day, when his festival concert turns out to be a massive flop, Jack feels it's time to give up on his music career despite Ellie's words of encouragement.

Soon enough, fate intervenes during a mysterious global power outage that renders the young musician unconscious after an unfortunate bus accident. When he awakens the following day, the world has never heard of The Beatles, and only Jack remembers their songs. In turn, the pop-music troubadour sees an irresistible opportunity of a lifetime to claim The Beatles' songs as his very own.

As Jack’s new musical adventure unfolds, so do the highs and lows of his guilt-ridden life. Can Jack ever reconcile his truthful past with his deceitful present and finally find the love of his life?

See it. With a fascinating premise, the film manages to bring enough smiles to brighten up one’s day, though it struggles at times to remain fresh and stimulating.
