“The League of Gentlemen started as a live show over 20 years ago and in many ways performing in front of an audience gives us the biggest thrill of all,” they said in a statement. “We’re overjoyed to be taking the citizens of Royston Vasey on a road-trip and can’t wait to see all the wonderful local places in our increasingly local country.”

They added: “Plus we’d already gone to the trouble of getting the costumes and learning the voices again for the TV show so we thought why not? Something to do isn’t it?”

After the League of Gentleman’s anniversary return was announced earlier this year, the BBC has now finally confirmed that it will air over the festive period – and teased a plot that sees the village of Royston Vasey facing “administrative annilhation”.

“Royston Vasey is facing a threat more dire than anything it has faced before: dark rumours of boundary changes that could erase the town from the map forever”, an official description cryptically states.

“The fight to save Royston Vasey from administrative annihilation will come from unexpected and surprising directions, all of them local…”

The episodes will air on BBC Two on December 18,19 and 20.
