Area football roundup: Conrad’s pick-six seals Bon Homme win over Platte-Geddes

PLATTE -- Class 9AA No. 1 Bon Homme escaped an early-season road test on Friday, using a long touchdown run and pick-six to defeat Platte-Geddes, 18-8.

Bon Homme’s lone offensive touchdown came from Nate Scieszinski, who ran for 31 yards. Jac Conrad returned an interception 20 yards to the house, while Joshua Crownover kicked a 39-yard field goal to cap the win.

For Platte-Geddes, Kelby VanDerWerff connected with Jackson Olsen for a nine-yard touchdown for the Black Panthers’ only score of the game.

The Cavaliers (1-0) play Menno/Marion on Friday in Tyndall. The Black Panthers (0-1) travel to Colome on September 6.

Burke 46, Lyman 8

BURKE -- Burke scored 30 points in the first half and held Lyman scoreless until the fourth quarter in its nine-man football win over the Raiders on Friday.

Taron Serr and Jaden Frank each scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half for the Cougars, while Serr also rushed for a 16-yard score in the fourth quarter. Hunter Van Nieuwenhuyse, who rushed for a touchdown in the third quarter, completed 3 of 7 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Finn Hanson led the Cougars’ rushing attack with 86 yards.

For Lyman, Corwin Mohr-Eymer scored the team’s only touchdown in the fourth quarter. He and Ty Schindler tied for a team-high 20 rushing yards. Teagan Gourneau went 7-for-16 with 54 yards through the air.

The Cougars (1-0) travel to Gregory on Friday. The Raiders (0-1) play Kimball/White Lake on Friday in Kimball.

Canistota/Freeman 44, Chester Area 0

CHESTER -- Class 9A No. 2 Canistota/Freeman used its ground attack to pick up 297 yards on 27 carries as it cruised past Chester Area on Friday.

Tyce Ortman paced the Pride on the ground, gaining 206 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Bailey Sage, Trey Ortman and Chase Merrill each rushed for a touchdown, too, helping the Pride score 22 points in each of the first two quarters. Trey Ortman also connected with Logan Katzer for a passing score, while he intercepted a pass and Tyce Ortman led the team with six tackles.

Ryan Benson rushed for 51 yards for Chester Area, which failed to complete a pass. Benson also had seven tackles in the loss.

The Pride (1-0) play De Smet on Friday in Freeman. The Flyers (0-1) hosts Avon on Friday.

Winner 44, Stanley County 6

WINNER -- Class 11B No. 3 Winner rode Trevor Peters’ 156 rushing yards to a win on Friday night over Stanley County.

Peters only needed 15 carries to top 150 yards and score three touchdowns, as he helped the Warriors gain all 351 yards on the ground. Brady Fritz (58) and Phillip Jorgensen (56) each topped 50 yards on the ground, too. Jorgenson, Evan Farner and Kaleb Osborn each scored a touchdown. Preston Norrid and Landon Thieman each had five tackles, and Ryder Mortenson had two tackles for loss.

Dylan Gabriel gained 66 yards on 14 carries for the Buffaloes. Defensively, Garrett Shoup finished with nine tackles. Cade Stover had five tackles, including one for a loss.

The Warriors (1-0) host St. Thomas More on Friday. The Buffaloes (0-1) plays Chamberlain on Friday in Fort Pierre.

Kimball/White Lake 44, TDA/ACDC 6

WHITE LAKE -- Class 9A No. 5 Kimball/White Lake scored the first 44 points and gained 308 yards of offense in a win over Tripp-Demont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Friday.

Nolan Kirsch did damage through the air and on the ground for the WiLdKats. He completed 11 of 15 passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns, while also gaining 78 yards and scoring once on the ground. Rafe Kiehn accounted for three total touchdowns, rushing for 75 yards. Caden Lenz led the team in receiving with 65 yards on four catches, while also catching a touchdown.

For the Thunderhawks, Tyler Swanson had eight tackles. Cade Faulkner connected with Swanson for a late-fourth quarter touchdown, as well. Faulkner went 5-for-9 with 102 yards through the air, completing 85 yards to Faulkner. Micah Lau rushed for 45 yards.

The WiLdKats (1-0) play Lyman on Friday in Kimball. The Thunderhawks (0-1) play Colome on Friday in Lake Andes.

Alcester-Hudson 44, Avon 0

ALCESTER -- After being held to six points in the first quarter, Alcester-Hudson scored 16 in each of the next two quarters to pull away in a win over Avon on Friday.

Logan Serck threw for two touchdowns for the Cubs, while also adding 117 yards and a score on the ground and an interception on defense. Alex Winquist gained 109 yards and scored on 11 carries. Izaak Reed rushed for 61 yards and scored two total touchdowns. Jaxon Doering caught Serck’s second touchdown toss. Jovey Christensen had four tackles and an interception.

Kory DeJong gained 51 yards on 14 carries for the Pirates, who finished with 156 yards as a team. Riley Rucktaeschel had nine tackles on defense, and Brady Bierema finished eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

The Cubs (1-0) play Estelline/Hendricks on Friday in Estelline. The Pirates (0-1) travel to Chester Area on Friday.

Gregory 50, Gayville-Volin 0

GREGORY -- Gregory scored six touchdowns en route to a fourth-quarter mercy rule win over Gayville-Volin on Friday.

The Gorillas gained 274 yards on the ground, with Luke Murray (54 yards) and Grant Thomas (49) carrying the load. Murray and Jackson Eklund both rushed for two scores. Through the air, Coy Determan completed 5 of 9 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. Evan Juracek caught three passes for 40 yards and a score.

The Raiders were held to 53 yards of total offense. Kyle Hirsch rushed seven times for 17 yards and caught six passes for 41 yards.

The Gorillas (1-0) host Burke on Friday. The Raiders (0-1) play Colman-Egan on Friday in Gayville.

Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan 49, Wagner 0

BRIDGEWATER -- Class B No. 1 Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan scored six rushing touchdowns with six different players to roll to a win over Wagner on Friday.

Seahawk quarterback Brady Hawkins threw one pass in the game, but he ran for 79 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries, while also returning an interception for a touchdown in the second quarter on defense.

Grant Andrews had a pair of touchdown runs and Koby Kayser added another as BEE took a 34-0 lead on the Red Raiders at halftime. Jonah Hofer and Kaden Klumb added touchdown runs in the second half, while the Seahawks.

Andrews had 91 yards on 12 carries and Hofer finished with 78 yards on nine attempts, while BEE ran for 328 as a team.

The Seahawks (1-0) play Elk Point-Jefferson on Friday in Elk Point. The Red Raiders (0-1) travel to Beresford on Friday.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton 20, Elk Point-Jefferson 14

ELK POINT -- Class 11B No. 4 Mount Vernon/Plankinton was held scoreless in the first half, but used a strong second half to get past Elk Point-Jefferson on Friday.

Jesse Hastings scored a pair of touchdowns -- from seven and 13 yards out -- while Hunter Pranger had a six-yard scoring scamper and led the team with 15 tackles.

Riley Schmitz led Elk Point-Jefferson with 145 rushing yards on 10 attempts, two of which he took to the end zone on runs of 57 and 69 yards.

The Titans (1-0) travel to Wagner on September 6. The Huskies (0-1) play Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan on Friday in Elk Point.

Wolsey-Wessington 62, Parkston 36

PARKSTON -- Wolsey-Wessington used a 28-point second quarter to earn a prep football win over Parkston on Friday.

The Warbirds rushed for 413 yards, with Skylar Zomer (135) and Eric Klanchnik (128) both topped 100 yards. Zomer finished with six total touchdowns in the win. He completed two touchdown tosses to Tristan Abbott, while Klanchnik rushed for two scores. Zomer completed 7 of 11 passes for 203 yards through the air.

Nate Doering went 7 of 14 for 106 yards and three touchdowns for Parkston, while Nathan Boettcher ran for 60 yards and a touchdown on five attempts, while also completing a 65-yard touchdown pass. All three of Rylan Leischner’s receptions resulted in touchdowns, as he racked up 136 yards.

The Warbirds (1-0) play Hitchcock-Tulare on Friday in Hitchcock. The Trojans (0-1) host Kimball/White Lake on September 6.

McCook Central/Montrose 39, Beresford 32

SALEM -- The Fighting Cougars had three players rush for at least 100 yards in a prep football win over Beresford on Friday.

Raygen Randall gained 100 yards on the ground to go with his 21-for-49 day through the air for 216 yards and two scores. Jacobi Krouse added a team-high 166 yards and two scores, while Blake Gessner finished with 144 yards. Krouse also led the team with 52 receiving yards.

Bradley Christensen racked up 19 tackles in the loss for the Watchdogs. Offensively, he gained 174 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, while throwing two more scores and 174 yards on 9-for-21 passing. Alex Docken caught a 54-yard touchdown. Brady Peterson led the team with 74 receiving yards.

The Fighting Cougars (1-0) travel to Flandreau on Friday. The Watchdogs (0-1) host Wagner on Friday.

Colome 22, Corsica-Stickney 18 in Colome: In a battle of ranked teams, Class 9B No. 2 Colome took down No. 4 Corsica-Stickney on Friday. The Cowboys (1-0) play Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Friday in Lake Andes. The Jaguars (0-1) play Irene-Wakonda on Friday in Corsica.

Hanson 24, Menno/Marion 14 in Marion: Hanson took a 16-6 lead into halftime and was able to hold on for a prep football win on Friday. The Beavers (1-0) travel to Parker on September 6. The Razorbacks (0-1) play Bon Homme on Friday in Tyndall.

Irene-Wakonda 39, Scotland 22 in Irene: The Eagles opened up a 32-6 lead into the halftime break and were able to hold off Scotland for the win. Irene-Wakonda (1-0) play Corsica-Stickney on Friday in Corsica. The Highlanders (0-1) host Howard on Friday.

Howard 36, Castlewood 0 in Castlewood: Howard took a 22-0 lead into halftime, then held on for a 36-0 win over Castlewood in prep football action on Friday. The Tigers (1-0) travel to Scotland on Friday. The Warriors (0-1) travel to Dell Rapids St. Mary on Friday.
