A major Democrat donor has demanded the party to push for impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.
Billionaire Tom Steyer sent a letter to Democrat lawmakers, asking them to seek impeachment of Trump and suggesting that the Republican is unfit for office. He also stated there was no reason to believe he could be a good president.
In the letter, cited by The New York Times on Wednesday, Steyer wrote: "Given that it is clear for all to see that Trump is not fit for office, the question of impeachment becomes a very real issue when Democrats take back the House and Senate, which makes it imperative that the public deserves to know where every Democrat stands on the issue of the highest import to the lives of every single American now, before those elections happen."
"This is not a time for 'patience' – Donald Trump is not fit for office. It is clear for all to see that there is zero reason to believe 'he can be a good president,'" he added in what appeared to be a rebuke to California Senator Dianne Feinstein, who has previously suggested Trump could be a good president if given enough time and patience.
The mega-donor—who put more than $91 million into the party in the previous election cycle, according to a report from The Hill—requested that if Democrats take control of Congress next year they make a move to impeach the president.
He suggested Trump could be impeached on grounds of "abuse or violation of some public trust," laying out the case that founding father and co-author of the Federalist Papers, Alexander Hamilton, had argued that this could constitute a "high crimes and misdemeanor" for which a president could be impeached.
The billionaire also laid out a number of topics he felt Trump had demonstrated failures in, including his healthcare proposals and treatment of immigrants.
Trump's likelihood of being impeached was echoed by a report from The Brookings Institution. The paper, published on Tuesday, went on to say that Trump obstructed justice when he got in the way of investigations into Russian interference during the presidential election by trying to persuade FBI Director James Comey to drop the bureau's probe and then firing him.
The letter from Steyer added: "I am asking you all today to make public your position on the impeachment of Donald Trump and call for his removal from office. I hope you will make your position clear so that Democrat voters who are under constant attack by this administration know their elected representatives have the patriotism and political courage to stand up and take action when it is so desperately needed."
