Newborn baby found dead in vacant upstate New York lot

The body of a dead newborn baby with its umbilical cord still attached was found deserted in an upstate New York parking lot, a report said.

Police in Port Jervis made the discovery about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday after a witness reported seeing the baby in the vacant lot on Orange Street, according to recordonline.com.

Authorities have interviewed the baby’s mother, but as of Wednesday night, no charges have been filed against her, Port Jervis Police Chief William Worden told the news site.

The baby and mother haven’t been identified.

The Orange County Medical Examiner’s office conducted an autopsy on Wednesday. Their findings were not immediately clear and police are still awaiting additional testing results.

Neighbors in the area, which is about 80 miles north of Manhattan, were horrified by grisly find.

“It’s just horrible,” Bonnie Hann told the site. “It’s heartbreaking. I wish I could have been outside and saw them and saved that baby.”
