Former Springfield Mayor Charles Ryan funeral draws throng of dignitaries, friends

SPRINGFIELD — Memorial services for former Mayor Charles V. Ryan Jr. on Saturday drew dignitaries, his former department heads and all of his enormous family.

Ryan died on Oct. 18 at 94. According to those who knew him best, he took every good thing out of life: a 63-year love affair with his college sweetheart, 11 children, 36 grandchildren and a boundless legacy in the city where he was raised.
