FARGO — More than 50 participants and two former major leaguers took part in the Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament at Rose Creek on Monday.

"All the people I've met here, I mean between the volunteers and the players," said baseball hall of fame player Johnny Bench. "(A) lot of players, this last group I think I was from Sioux Falls, so they come from a lot of places to participate in this. They know about what happening and they appreciate the efforts and what it stands for. "

Throughout the competition, there were memories of previous success mixed with competitiveness from their old playing days.

"We just enjoy needling each other and slamming it in and all that, it's fun," said former MLB standout Tommy John.

"Well all you have to do is look at the list of people who've been here. You know our names sometimes pale in comparison to the people that have come out to support this," said Bench.

At the end of the day, these men understand that their appearance goes far beyond playing 18 holes of golf.

"Doing stuff to raise money for people that need help and we can help them by just coming out and playing golf, " said John.

Throughout the tournament's 36-year history, more $2 million has been raised from the event.
