As tributes pour in following the news that 1960s counterculture figure and Traverse Theatre founder Jim Haynes has died, we take a closer look at the life and times of a man who was truly one of a kind.

Born in Louisiana, Haynes relocated to Europe in the late 1950s, settling for a time in Edinburgh where he helped transform the underground arts scene.

Along with local arts icon Richard Demarco, Haynes founded the Traverse Theatre, with the venue serving as a launchpad for a whole host of future famous names in British theatre and film.

In 1969, Haynes moved to Paris where he became well-known for his open house dinner parties and further established himself as a leading figure of the counterculture.

Maintaining links with Scotland and Edinburgh throughout his life, Haynes was awarded an honorary doctorate from Edinburgh Napier University in 2018.
