John Gilbert Getty, heir to the Getty oil fortune, dead at 52

John Gilbert Getty — an heir to the Getty oil fortune — reportedly died in Texas on Friday. He was 52.

Getty had been found unresponsive in a San Antonio hotel room and foul play is not suspected, law enforcement sources told TMZ.

“With a heavy heart, Gordon Getty announces the death of his son, John Gilbert Getty,” a family spokesperson told the outlet.

“John was a talented musician who loved rock and roll. He will be deeply missed,” the rep said.

Getty was the grandson of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty. He has had several homes in Los Angeles and in 2018 purchased a $3.9 million property in Hollywood Hills West, the Los Angeles Times reported.

In 2015, Getty’s brother, Andrew Getty, died from an ulcer-related hemorrhage at his Los Angeles home.

Andrew was also found to have a toxic level of methamphetamine in his body.

The same year, Forbes estimated the Getty family fortune to be valued at $5 billion.
