Steve Buscemi responds to viral video of Jennifer Lawrence with his face: "It makes me sad"

Deepfake technology will start a war someday (no, seriously), but, hey, at least we’re getting some good, weird shit out of it now. Last week, for example, some psycho gave us nightmares by superimposing Steve Buscemi’s face onto Jennifer Lawrence’s body in a video of the actress speaking at the 2016 Golden Globes. It’s a distinctly modern, deeply unnerving bit of digital trickery, the kind of thing an octogenarian priest, cross in hand and fear in his eyes, would scream at in Latin. Honestly, it’s probably something the majority of our elder generations would look at with suspicion. That, of course, has us wondering what 61-year old Buscemi thinks of the mashup.

The Boardwalk Empire actor had the opportunity to do so while visiting The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night. After chatting about Miracle Workers, his upcoming TBS series, Buscemi was presented with the clip, which he watched with narrowed eyes and a marked look of distrust. He begins with a joke—“I’ve never looked better”—before pondering on how dire it is that someone put so much effort into something so colossally stupid.

“It makes me sad that somebody spent that much time on that,” he said, because I’ll bet that was hard to do.” Colbert, who, per his commentary here, seems (rightfully) terrified of deepfakes, agreed. The technology could’ve been used to cure a disease, but instead somebody turned you into Jennifer Lawrence,” he said.

The whole interview is worth a watch. Buscemi not only chats about playing God on Miracle Workers, but also details how Stanley Tucci, of all people, helped him land a role in the Beastie Boys’ “Fight for Your Right (Revisited) video. Watch it below.
