Travel+Leisure Highlights Underground Railroad Tour In Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Travel+Leisure is highlighting City Council member and Manumission Tour Company owner John T. Chapman in new video about his Underground Railroad tour.

The Underground Railroad Route, a walking tour launched in fall 2020, is discussed in a video released by the magazine in time for Black History Month. The tour features stories of enslaved people in Alexandria who escaped via the Underground Railroad. These accounts come from abolitionist William Still's 1872 book called "The Underground Railroad." The tour shows where these individuals may have lived and worked, when and how they escaped and who may have helped them.

Manumission Tour Company was started in 2016 by Chapman, a fourth generation Alexandrian. The tour company seeks to highlight the history of Black people in Alexandria through guided tours.
