Canada has won a bronze medal in the 5,000-metre men’s short-track speed skating relay at the Winter Olympics.

The Canadian team of Samuel Girard, Charles Hamelin, Charle Cournoyer and Pascal Dion finished third with a time of 6:32.282.

Hungary took gold, setting an Olympic record time in the process, and China took silver. A difficult exchange in the final laps put Canada in the bronze medal position.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

A South Korean skater fell midway through the race, taking his team out of medal contention.

Girard, who is making his Olympic debut, just missed out on a medal earlier in the day, finishing fourth in the 500-metre final. He won gold in the 1,000 earlier in the Games.

Hamelin, the team’s veteran, was finally able to earn a medal in what will be his last Olympics. He did not medal in any of the individual distances. With this, his fifth Olympic medal, he matched Marc Gagnon and Francois-Louis Tremblay for the most career Olympic short-track speed skating medals by a Canadian.

He plans to retire after a World Cup event just after the Olympics.
