Michigan has more than 19 million acres of forest, 3,000 miles of freshwater shoreline, hundreds of waterfalls and miles of majestic, sweeping dunes.
It’s an outdoor paradise spread across two peninsulas, and people are starting to notice.
TripSavvy, a national travel publication, named Michigan the best place in the world for outdoor enthusiasts in 2020 on Wednesday as part of its annual list highlighting hot spots for various activities and interests.
The best places to travel in 2020 for history buffs, foodies, honeymooners, fine dining, culture and more were included in the same list.
TripSavvy writer Emily Hines highlighted several of Michigan’s most popular outdoor attractions in the post including Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, the Mackinac Bridge and The Tunnel of Trees on M-119.
Upper Peninsula stalwarts like Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rocks and Presque Isle Park’s Blackrocks were also listed. Isle Royale National Park was noted as “a sanctuary for hikers, shipwreck divers, and fishermen.”
Finally, Hines touched on perhaps Michigan’s most unique feature, Kitch-iti-kipi, located near Manistique.
“Meaning "big spring," it’s Michigan’s largest and bubbles yearlong so visitors can peer down into the crystal-clear underwater oasis,” she wrote.
