ore than 4,000 companies, representing over a third of the global economy’s market capitalization, had by the end of 2022 set targets to reduce or completely offset their carbon emissions to slow climate change—a goal known as “net zero”—according to the Science Based Targets Initiative, a global project of nonprofits including the United Nations Global Compact.

Another encouraging data point: Fidelity International’s 2023 internal survey of its market-segment analysts suggests that companies’ environmental, social and governance (ESG) concerns remain strong. Nine of 10 analysts said that commitment to meeting climate goals hasn’t dipped, even after volatile economic changes or the war in Ukraine.

So while the goal of net zero remains decades from becoming a reality, Forbes wanted to identify which companies are leading the way not just in transitioning to a low-carbon economy by 2050 but are also adjusting their business model to achieve sustainability targets.

To create our newest list, Net Zero Leaders, Forbes used data from research providers Sustainalytics and Morningstar to rank the U.S. companies best positioned for a net-zero 2050. Companies are considered in the context of their industry and location of business operations—because the challenges for airlines or oil and gas producers are vastly different than for banks or hotel chains.

    The top 100 appear below.
