A Utah GOP lawmaker wants his colleagues to send a message of support to President Trump by voting to censure Utah Sen. Mitt Romney over his vote to convict the commander-in-chief in his impeachment trial.
Rep. Phil Lyman of Blanding — population 3,375, the biggest town in San Juan County — announced that he had filed the resolution saying Romney showed poor judgment, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Lyman said Romney may have followed his conscience in voting to convict the president and that he respected politicians who “go against the grain.”
But Romney’s “attacks” on Trump — including voting to see more evidence and hear from witnesses in the impeachment trial — have hurt the GOP in the Beehive State, the paper reported.
“We’re not censuring him for voting his conscience. We’re censuring him for the positions that he’s taken through this whole process,” Lyman said.
“And to send a message that we want to have good relationships with the White House, we want to have good relationships with President Trump.”
