WASHINGTON, DC — Two men were wounded by gunfire Thursday evening during a shooting in Logan Circle that frightened diners and sent people ducking for cover.

The shooting occurred near the intersection of 14th and Riggs streets NW, an area filled with pedestrians, restaurant patrons and passersby. Shooters are seemingly becoming more brazen in D.C. as the Metropolitan Police Department struggles to find the perpetrators in many of the city’s violent crimes.

At about 8:20 p.m. Thursday, D.C. police heard the sounds of gunshots and responded to the intersection. Despite quickly arriving at the scene, the police were unable to catch the shooters.

Two adult men were found, both conscious and breathing, suffering from gunshot wounds. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victims to area hospitals for treatment of injuries from which they are expected to recover.

DC Police Chief Robert Contee said at a news conference Thursday night that it appears that one person was targeted in Thursday night's shooting and the second shooting victim was a bystander.

On Friday, the MPD released video of two of the suspects. One is wearing a yellow hoodie and appears to be pointing their gun at a blurred image. Then it shows both suspects, the other in a black hoodie, fleeing to a black sedan with a driver.

The shooting occurred near the new Amazon Fresh grocery store, which held its grand opening earlier Thursday. The gunfire lasted up to a minute and involved multiple shooters, according to witnesses, The Washington Post reported.

The shootings are part of a months-long violent crime spree across the District, with most cases still unsolved by D.C. police. Last Saturday night, shooters shot three people outside the third base gate of National Park, causing panic and terror among the large crowd inside the stadium.

Police also are still trying to solve the July 16 fatal shooting of 6-year-old Nyiah Courtney in Southeast D.C.

In June, a 53-year-old man who was shot and killed as he was caught in gunfire as he walked in Logan Circle, near where Thursday night's shooting occurred.

A total of 93 people have been killed in the city in 2020, up 18 percent from this time in 2020. Homicides are rising in the District for the fourth consecutive year.

All of the violence comes in the wake of the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department failing to protect the U.S. Capitol from supporters of then-President Donald Trump who were able to enter the complex and ransack offices. In some cases, members of the Capitol Police force were seen taking selfies and chatting with the Trump supporters.

In contrast, after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in late May 2020, officers from multiple police agencies across the D.C. area violently attacked mostly peaceful protesters in the city on multiple occasions. The protesters were marching to get officials to hold police officers and departments accountable for certain police killings of Black people across the country.

In Thursday night’s shooting, the suspects and vehicle, described as an older black sedan, were captured by a nearby camera.

Anyone who can identify the suspects and vehicle, or has knowledge of this incident should call police at 202-727-9099, or text your tip to the MPD's text tip line at 50411.

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a violent crime committed in the District of Columbia.
