Several cars were trapped in the Crowfoot LRT parking lot on Tuesday afternoon after a sinkhole appeared.
A spokesperson for the city’s transportation department said on Wednesday it first became aware of the problem early Tuesday evening when huge cracks appeared in the concrete and pavement.
The Calgary fire department investigated and taped off the area trapping three vehicles inside.
The sinkhole is in the shape of a half moon, about 30 metres long by 12 metres wide.
Three vehicles in the lot could not be moved Tuesday for fear the unstable ground might shift further or open up, but officials said the drivers may be able to get them back Wednesday night.
City officials put cameras down the manholes in the parking lot in hopes of finding any damage underneath. One possibility being explored is an underground stormwater catch basin that’s about the same size as the sinkhole.
“We’ll get preliminary stuff done today and an excavation in the next few days to determine the bulk of what remediation will look like,” said Calgary Transit infrastructure manager Steve Patrick. “It will take a while.”
Depending on how much a fix could cost, the city said it may opt to permanently block the area off.
CTrain service at the station is unaffected.
