Mayor de Blasio declares March 14 COVID-19 Remembrance Day

March 14 will be COVID-19 Remembrance Day in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio declared Thursday.

The city reported its first coronavirus fatality on March 14, 2020, and the event will recognize all the people who died from the bug since.

The city Health Department reports that 25,099 Big Apple deaths are linked to COVID-19.

Of that total, 20,295 were confirmed deaths from the virus while 4,804 other fatalities were deemed “probable” COVID-19 cases.

De Blasio said residents of “every background” were impacted, but noted the disease particularly affected the city’s poorest minority neighborhoods.

“So many we lost were victims of disparities … victims of too much racism,” the mayor said during his year-end press briefing.
