Shocking moment gunmen ambushed and executed Ecuadorian sprinter Álex Quiñónez and a local rapper

  • Olympic sprinter Álex Quiñónez, 32, was gunned down in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on Friday
  • Quiñónez was standing with a group outside a store when two gunmen jumped out of a vehicle to mug them 
  • One of the shooters shot Quiñónez multiple times and appeared to removed his personal belongings 
  • A second gunman shot dead rapper Christopher Arcalla, 24 
  • The National Police sources believe the attackers were only targeting Arcalla 
  • Quiñónez represented Ecuador at the 2012 London Games, finishing seventh in the 200 meter final behind Usain Bolt

Surveillance video footage shows the tragic moment Olympic sprinter Álex Quiñónez, 32, and rapper Christopher Arcalla, 24, were executed on a street in Ecuador last week.

Quiñónez and Arcalla were standing with a group of people when two gunmen stepped out of a SUV in the Guayaquil town of Colinas de la Florida on Friday night.

The security camera footage shows a group of men, including Quiñónez, fleeing from the gunmen before one of the assailants opens fired at point-blank range and strikes the Olympian.

The gunman’s accomplice can be seen in the background pointing his weapon at a defenseless Arcalla; he shot him 15 times, police say.

On video, it appeared as if the gunman continues to fired at Quiñónez while he was lying on the ground. He was shot six more times.

Both suspects removed belongings from Quiñónez and Arcalla before they got back in the vehicle and fled.

The National Police on Sunday detained a suspect identified as Johnson G. after he shot at two people who were attending Arcalla’s wake. 

He escaped on a bicycle but was captured after exchanging fire with the police.

It’s unknown if Johnson G. is one of the two shooters linked to the killings.

The vehicle used in the shooting Friday was found in the town of Duran on Monday.

Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo reported that police sources with knowledge of the investigation believe Quiñónez was an innocent bystander and that Arcalla may have been the intended target. 

While Quiñónez did not have a criminal record, Arcalla had been investigated in the past for gun possession and making threats.

Quiñónez earned national hero status for reaching the 2012 London Olympics 200-meter final, finishing seventh behind Usain Bolt.

He placed third in the 200-meter competition at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

He qualified for the Tokyo Olympics but was not allowed to run after a suspension for breaking the whereabout rules.

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso has vowed that the killing 'will not go unpunished.'
