A former BBC Radio 6 Music presenter has died after being struck by a train on her way to a shopping trip. 39-year-old Kelly Jobanputra's family has described what happened as a "tragic accident".

Mother-of-two Kelly had left her home in Swindon for a shopping trip, just three days before her 40th birthday, when the incident occurred. Kelly was accidentally hit by a train between Swindon and Didcot Parkway, and was pronounced dead on the scene by British Transport Police.

Speaking to the Swindon Advertiser, Kelly's dad John Stooke described the family's grief.

"We are completely and utterly bereft to lose such a vibrant, attractive, courageous and well-loved family member at such a very young age," he said.

"Whilst the circumstances are not at all clear, this may well have been, in the end, an unintended and tragic accident," he continued.

British Transport Police confirmed the incident in a statement that read: "At 2.14pm on Friday, 26 April, officers were called to the railway close to Swindon station after reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however a woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Her family have been informed."

The police confirmed the incident is "not currently being treated as suspicious", and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

One of Kelly's former colleagues at the BBC, broadcaster Dan Chisholm, posted a tribute to her on Twitter. "My lovely friend and former BBC colleague Kelly Jobanputra has died. A beautiful bright light has gone out way too soon," he wrote.

Sending his condolences to Kelly's family, he added: "Sleep well Kels; thank you for bringing such joy into my life. Friendship like yours is rare".

A spokesperson for the BBC said of Kelly's death: "We are sorry to hear this incredibly sad news and our thoughts are with Kelly’s family and friends at this time."
