Franklin High School is one of 14 meal sites for children aged 1-18 who typically rely on free breakfast and lunches as Portland Public Schools cancel classes as part of an order by Gov. Kate Brown to prevent the spread of coronavirus. To-go meals will be served starting March 17 and will be distributed from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.Photo by Eder Campuzano/Staff

Gov. Kate Brown on Thursday announced all public schools will close until April in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus, triggering questions about how kids will access various services districts provide when classes are in session.

Among them was how low-income students will access meals without free breakfast and lunch.

Portland Public Schools on Friday announced 14 schools will serve to-go meals starting March 17. Breakfast and lunch will be provided from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. through March 20 and March 30-31 and will not be served on the weekends or during spring break.

The district has also been inundated with offers from would-be volunteers.

“We are humbled by the huge outpouring of community concern and offers of support for our PPS families,” officials said in a release. “While we love our volunteers, we ask that during the extended spring break, you refrain from coming to school meal sites unless you are a PPS family picking up food.”
