  • Jack Grealish has missed the last nine Aston Villa matches with a shin injury
  • England boss Gareth Southgate was seen speaking to Grealish on Wednesday
  • Dean Smith claims Grealish will have a scan next week to determine his return
  • The midfielder appears certain to be named in England's final 23 for Euro 2020

Jack Grealish will have a scan on his shin injury in the coming days with Aston Villa boss Dean Smith insisting his captain will be fit for Euro 2020.

The playmaker has missed Villa’s last nine matches due to the problem and there is no clear date for his comeback, though the club are hopeful he will return for the final few games of the campaign.

Grealish was seen in conversation with England manager Gareth Southgate at half-time during Villa’s home defeat by Manchester City on Wednesday and appears certain to be named in the final 23 for the tournament, fitness permitting.

‘There's not really a timeline as such,’ said Smith. ‘He's due to have a scan next week and hopefully, that clears it up and he can go on with training.

‘But we’re guided by the doctors. I have no doubt he'll be okay for the Euros.’

The 25-year-old shone when given his chance for the senior side last autumn and until his injury had been one of the best attackers in the country, with six goals and 10 assists in the league.

But Villa have missed Grealish’s creativity in his absence, collecting only eight points from those matches and drifting out of contention for a European place, ahead of Sunday's derby against West Bromwich Albion.

Smith added: ‘It been a really tough part of the season for everyone. There doesn’t seem to be an awful lot of rhythm.

‘Apart from Pep Guardiola, I don’t see many managers apart walking out after the game saying their team have played well.’
