Overnight snow brought totals in Duluth to over a foot and made it the 22nd highest one-day snowfall in city history dating back to the late-1800s, said the National Weather Service-based in Duluth.
Blizzard conditions that were sweeping across the Upper Midwest were blowing down this morning.
But additional snowfall was continuing in places into Friday “with the highest accumulations expected along the North Shore of Lake Superior,” the National Weather Service said in an overnight news release.
Duluth’s 12.2-inch average during Thursday’s all-day snowfall was the highest since a 12.7-inch blast last April.
The highest single-day snowfall in Duluth history is 24.1 inches on Nov. 1, 1991.

Around the area as much as 15 inches fell around the Silver Bay area and the Brainerd Lakes area was pelted with 13 inches. Finland and Lutsen had the highest recorded totals at 24 inches.
A winter storm warning ended midmorning, but the tapering snow was not expected to go away entirely. An additional 1 to 3 inches is possible in northwest Wisconsin while Minnesota counties will likely see less than an inch of additional accumulation, the weather service said.
Tonight, wind chills will become the story, dropping to 25 below zero across the Minnesota Arrowhead Region. Wind chill advisories may be forthcoming, the weather service said.
