Deadline Approaching To Apply To Vote In General Election

NEW YORK — Planning on voting in the upcoming general election in New York? Then you need to be registered to vote. The deadline for that is coming up quickly.

According to the state Board of Elections, applications to register to vote on Election Day must be postmarked no later than Friday. Those applications must be received by a board of elections no later than Oct. 14 to be eligible to vote in the general election.

In-person registration may take place at your local board of elections or any state agency that participates in the National Voter Registration Act — such as the Department of Motor Vehicles — but to be able to vote Nov. 3, the application must be received not later than Friday. Honorably discharged military personnel or people who have become naturalized citizens after Friday may register in person at their board of elections up until Oct. 24.

If you are already registered and need to change your address, the local board of elections must receive the information by Oct. 14 in order for it to be processed and entered in the records in time to vote Nov. 3.

The last day to apply for an absentee ballot online or by email, fax or snail mail is Oct. 27. However, the U.S. Postal Service has said it cannot guarantee timely deliver of ballots applied for less than 15 days before an election. You may apply in-person for an absentee ballot up to Monday, Nov. 2, which is the day before the election.

Absentee ballots must be postmarked by Tuesday, Nov. 3 and received by Tuesday, Nov. 10. They may be returned to your county board of elections office no later than 9 p.m. Nov. 3 or brought to an early voting site between Oct. 24 and Nov. 1 or to a polling site by 9 p.m. on Nov. 3.
