Josh Jackson has been named the starting quarterback at Maryland heading into the 2019 season, head coach Mike Locksley announced Monday.
The redshirt junior and former Virginia Tech signal caller was named the starter for the Terrapins over Tyrell Pigrome, Lance LeGendre and Tyler DeSue.
As a redshirt freshman, Jackson started his college career strong for the Hokies as he completed 236 of 396 passes. He led all Power Five freshmen quarterbacks with 2,991 yards and threw for a Virginia Tech freshman record 20 touchdowns. He also rushed for 324 yards six scores in 13 games as the starter in 2017.
Jackson played just three games his sophomore redshirt season in 2018 due to a fractured fibula, forcing him to miss the rest of the season. He made the move to Maryland as a graduate transfer in February.
In high school, Jackson was a 4-star recruit at Saline and played under Joe Palka, who wasn’t surprised Jackson won the starting position.
“Josh has always been kind of ‘that guy’ wherever he’s been,” Palka said Monday. “His leadership and skill level always seems to surface, so I’m not surprised. I’m happy for him, I actually texted with him three or four days ago and he said camp was going really well. I think Maryland is going to be in great shape with him as a starter. I’m excited to see what he does this year.”
The Terrapins will open the season Saturday, Aug. 31 at home against Howard.
