10 Cows Killed When Truck Overturns On I-75 (UPDATED)

The Georgia Department of Agriculture helped clean up the accident scene, which snarled traffic Thursday morning in north metro Atlanta.

KENNESAW, GA β€” Nearly a dozen cows died Thursday morning when a tractor trailer hauling cattle overturned on Interstate 75 in Cobb County.

The driver of the tractor trailer was traveling on the southbound side near Wade Green Road when he drifted off to the right side of the roadway, overcorrected and collided with an attenuation barrier, said Cobb police spokesperson Sgt. Wayne Delk. The trailer then overturned onto the interstate.

Cobb police initially reported seven cows were killed in the collision, and that police had to corral the remaining cattle that dispersed onto the interstate after the accident.

However, Julie McPeake, spokesperson with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, said the number of deceased cows has been bumped up to 10. The agency assisted with cleanup and removal of the carcasses and remaining animals, she added. The remaining cows were transported to a location in Calhoun. At the time of their transport, McPeake said the animals were all "OK."

The accident caused a major snag in the morning rush hour period for those who were traveling from the far reaches of north metro Atlanta, as police had to shut down the interstate and divert traffic off at the Highway 92 interchange.
