ROMULUS, MI -- A Delta Airlines flight departing from Detroit Metro Airport Thursday had to return to the gate after a pair of customers refused to wear a mask during the flight. According to WXYZ Detroit, the flight was heading to Atlanta, but was delayed because of the two passengers.
A Delta spokesperson said the flight was delayed because the passengers “were non-compliant with crew instructions.” The flight eventually departed for Atlanta after a delay.
Delta, like most airlines have instituted various precautions that are designed to limit the possible exposure of COVID-19 to passengers and staff. As part of Delta’s safety program, everyone on the flight is required to wear a mask at all times, except during meal times. Guests who have a medical condition that prevents them from being able to wear a mask, they must complete a ‘Clearance-to-Fly’ process which can take up to an hour to complete.
Anyone who is caught falsely claiming to be medically unable to wear a mask may be banned from flying on the airline in the future.
Delta has also limited the number of passengers in the various cabins, blocked off middle seats and limited aisle seats in rows with two seats. The company also limits food and beverage service based on how long the flight is and will no longer allow crew to assist passengers with their luggage in order to limit touch points.
