Sandy Hook School Evacuated After Threat

The threat comes on the sixth anniversary of the shooting that claimed the lives of 20 children and six educators.

NEWTOWN, CT — Sandy Hook Elementary School was evacuated Friday morning after a threat and the school has been dismissed for the day. Friday marks the sixth anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that claimed the lives of 20 children and six educators.

Police are investigating the matter. A bomb threat was made and the area is being checked out of abundance of caution

"Newtown Police went to Sandy Hook School to investigate the threat and it is currently being investigated by members of the Newtown Police Department," said Lt. Aaron Bahamonde, police spokesman. "The school was safely and orderly evacuated for precautionary reasons and so that a thorough sweep of the school could be performed."

The school superintendent decided it was in the best interest of students and faculty to dismiss them for the day. The school received the threat via a phone call around 9:20 a.m. and promptly called police.

Other schools in the district were put into safe school mode and visitors to campuses were limited.

"Despite the difficulty of the day, staff administrators and community members handled the incident calmly, professionally and with students best interests at heart," said Superintendent Lorrie Rodrigue. "I applaud the courage and strength that was so visible throughout the day."

The threat isn't related to yesterday's mass bomb threat that caused searches and lockdowns across the nation, according to Fox 61.

"Please stand with our community as we attempt to survive another tragic anniversary," Newtown Action Alliance tweeted.

The original Sandy Hook Elementary School was demolished following the shooting and a new one was built.

It isn't the first post-Sandy Hook shooting the Newtown community has had to deal with. The temporary Sandy Hook Elementary School in Monroe was evacuated in 2014 after a bomb threat.

A Venezuelan man was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison after he pleaded guilty to making dozens of threatening phone calls to Newtown residences days after the shooting.
