It’s the 21st Century and robots are making salads.
A new robot chef is about to start serving food to students at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester.
Sally is the name of the world’s first fresh food robot, which is coming to Holy Cross in partnership with food robotics company Chowbotics, according to a news release.
Starting Sept. 3, Sally will be stationed at the Hogan Campus Center ready to prepare meals for students, faculty and visitors.
Initial offerings by Sally will include salads. More options will be added later, as Sally can make grain bowls, breakfast bowls and custom meal options from any combination of up to 22 ingredients, the news release read.
Sally will be accessible from 7:30 a.m. until 1 a.m., according to the news release, and accepts dining dollars and “Crusader Cash.”
Other campus facilities close at 8 p.m., meaning Sally will give students a chance to get healthy food on late nights.
With Sally, students can add or subtract ingredients to change calorie totals and can see nutritional details for all selections, the news release read.
“Chowbotics’s proprietary technology also reduces the risk of foodborne illness, as ingredients are kept sanitary and separate,” the news release read. “Each of Sally’s ingredients is replenished on a regular basis and contained within the robot, greatly reducing the potential for contamination.”
Other colleges planning to use Sally include Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, the University of Guelph in Canada, the University of Memphis and Wichita State.
