  • The highly-regarded Brazilian is wanted by a number of top European clubs

Sevilla want Newcastle United to pay £40million for Brazilian defender Diego Carlos with Eddie Howe desperate to land a new centre back this month.

The highly-regarded Brazilian defender has asked to leave the LaLiga side, prompting a flurry of interest from top European clubs.

AC Milan have also proposed a deal for the 28-year-old but it has fallen short of Newcastle's current offer of £32m, with the mega-rich Magpies eyeing new signings in their bid to avoid relegation.

As Sportsmail reported last week, Tottenham have also expressed interest in signing Carlos with Antonio Conte hopeful of adding to his squad during the January transfer window in an attempt to boost their chances of obtaining a top-four finish.

Newcastle have already signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, but are said to be in the market to boost their defensive options.

The Brazilian defender is said to be keen on the move to St James' Park and negotiations over a deal are taking place.

Carlos joined Sevilla from Nantes in 2019 and has gone on to make 121 appearances for the club.

Newcastle have also asked about Liverpool defender Nat Phillips. The 24-year old is available with Liverpool preferring to sell for between £10m and £15m.

The Magpies had been looking to agree a loan deal with an obligation to buy the Englishman if they stay up.

However, Liverpool have already rejected £7m from Watford while a move to PSV Eindhoven failed to materialise because they wanted a loan.

Newcastle chiefs held a meeting on Monday to assess where they are with their transfer targets, with just over a week remaining in the window.

The Magpies currently sit 18th in the Premier League following a 1-0 win over Leeds on Saturday, and will look to avoid relegation by adding reinforcements in the coming days.

There is interest in Tottenham outcast Dele Alli, Manchester United's Jesse Lingard and Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele among other targets.

Mitchel Bakker of Bayer Leverkusen is another defensive target, as is Fiorentina's Nikola Milenkovic.

There has also been interest in recent days in Burnley's James Tarkowski, as well as Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma as the Magpies cast their net far and wide in their bid to avoid the drop.
